In , Gotti was diagnosed with cancer. It was treated, but returned, and in he died in a federal prison hospital. John Gotti III was arrested and charged with racketeering in , convicted and sentenced to six years in prison. When Gotti was in fourth grade his family moved from the South Bronx, then a working-class area of apartment complexes, to Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. At the age of 16, he dropped out of high school and became a full-time member of the Fulton-Rockaway Boys street gang. A year later, a gang fight led to his first arrest.
Charged with disorderly conduct the case was eventually dismissed. More arrests followed for burglary, disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly when he got caught in a raid on a gambling joint; but again without serious consequences.
John Gotti remained a novice at crime and was forced to take on a legitimate job operating a garment-pressing machine in a Brooklyn coat factory. He met Victoria DiGiorgio, the daughter of a sanitation worker, who had dropped out of high school in her senior year. They had their first child in , soon to be followed by two more children after their wedding in In the meantime John Gotti had begun work as a truck driver's helper, a job which allowed him to learn how to value goods and how shippers and warehouses operated.
John Gotti served his first jail term, 20 days for being apprehended in a stolen car, in Three years later, in , he spent several months in jail after pleading guilty to attempted theft which cost him his job with the trucking company. Without legitimate employment, John Gotti, at the age of 26, became a professional hijacker.
He operated out of a social club, the Bergin Hunt and Fish Club, under the tutelage of Carmine and Daniel Fatico, two adult-gang members of the Rockaway Boys and connected to the Gambino crime family.
In , Gotti, by now the father of four children, was sent away to Lewisburg federal penitentiary to serve a four year sentence for cargo theft at JFK international airport. After his release, and after Carmine Fatico was indicted on loan-sharking charges, John Gotti, at age 31, became acting captain of the Bergin crew, even though he was not yet formally inducted into Cosa Nostra.
He reported to Neil Dellacroce, and, when Dellacroce went behind bars, directly to family boss Carlo Gambino himself. At that time, Gotti's financial situation had improved.
He had acquired interests in a motel and a Chinese restaurant, he was the hidden owner of a Queens disco and he ran gambling and loan-sharking operations. In Gotti participated in the murder of James McBratney, the member of a gang that specialized in robbing and kidnapping bookmakers and loan sharks. The murder was ordered after a nephew of Carlo Gambino's had been kidnapped and found dead. Taking part in the McBratney killing eventually meant for Gotti another two years in prison, but it also made him eligible for Cosa Nostra membership.
After Carlo Gambino died, after 'the books were opened' and after serving his time for the McBratney murder, John Gotti was 'made' in In the neighborhood around st Avenue in Ozone Park, where the Bergin social club was now located, Gotti gradually became a celebrity: some residents began saluting him by alerting the club to the presence of undercover detectives.
The accident gave the mobster-to-be his trademark gait and earned him another incident on his list of petty crimes. He was considered a bully and constant discipline problem at Franklin K.
Lane High School until he dropped out at By the age of 18, the police department ranked Gotti as a low-level associate in the Fatico crew. Between and , Gotti pursued a life of crime on a full-time basis. His arrest record included street fighting, public intoxication and car theft. By his 21st birthday, Gotti had been arrested five times but served little jail time.
At the time of their marriage, DiGiorgio had already given birth to their first child, Angela, and was pregnant with their second. In the early years of their marriage, the couple fought constantly and separated numerous times. Gotti briefly tried his hand at legitimate jobs for the sake of his family: first, as a presser in a coat factory, and then as an assistant to a truck driver.
His crime-free life was brief, however, and Gotti was jailed twice by When he and his family made the move to Ozone Park in Queens, New York, the budding criminal quickly became a major player in the Gambino hijacking crew. In , Gotti served his first major sentence when the FBI charged him and his two accomplices with committing cargo thefts near John F.
Kennedy Airport. All three men were convicted of hijacking and sentenced to three years in prison. The group's headquarters was disguised as a non-profit organization called the Bergin Hunt and Fish Club. After his release from prison in , Gotti was designated as the temporary leader of Fatico's gang while the captain faced loan-sharking charges. In May , while Gotti was captain of Fatico's crew, he committed his first murder: the shooting death of Jimmy McBratney, a rival gang member who kidnapped and murdered a member of the Gambino family.
Gotti was sent to exact revenge, but he was less than discreet, leaving multiple witnesses at the scene of the crime. Gotti was arrested in after several bystanders identified him in a photo line-up. At his trial three years later, Gotti cut a deal with the court.
In return for a plea of attempted manslaughter, he served only four years in prison. In , the head of the Gambino family, Carlo Gambino, died. Gambino chose to leave his brother-in-law, Paul Castellano, in charge of the family. In a gesture of goodwill, Castellano allowed Dellacroce to remain the family's underboss, giving him control over 10 of the 23 Gambino crews.
When Gotti returned from prison in , Dellacroce promoted the mobster to the captain of the Bergin crew.
In March , personal tragedy hit the Gotti family when year-old Frank, Gotti's youngest son, was struck by a car driven by neighbor John Favara after the boy steered his bike into traffic.
The death was ruled accidental, but witnesses say Gotti's wife, Victoria, later attacked Favara with a metal baseball bat, sending him to the hospital.
